A refuge in hammanskraal

By Mathias Weststrate

Friday, August 8th, was a day of joy for the community of Hammanskraal. After months of preparation, the moment had finally arrived for the official opening of the Safe House. The day was scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., but in true African fashion - "African time" - the program didn't begin until the time was right. At 11:15 a.m., Rev. Weststrate officially opened the Safe House. The opening was attended by approximately 150 local residents, several government representatives, and the missionary team.

Speech

His speech began with the words from Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

The Safe House is literally a refuge for those who have nowhere left to go, for those who are defeated, battered, or wounded. A place of safety, warmth, and peace. Rev. Weststrate connected this to the spiritual reality. For those who are brokenhearted and burdened with guilt before a just and holy God, there is refuge in Him. A place of protection, like a hut sheltering from the storm.

Harsh reality

After these words, it was Mma Catherine’s turn to speak. She described the harsh reality. Hammanskraal is an area where abuse and violence are common, while the government barely intervenes. "That's why this Safe House was opened," she said. "A safe place, a place with shoulders to cry on."

Manager Sonto expressed his gratitude to the visitors, volunteers, and his team for their support and dedication. Then came the long-awaited moment: the ribbon was cut and the Safe House officially opened.

Visitors walked through the building in awe. Many were surprised to see running and hot water, and even a toilet and shower. A true refuge in a difficult environment.

The festive day ended with a shared meal and drinks for all those present. It was a day of encounters, gratitude, and hope for the future.
